AN ICEBERGER WITH THE LOT: FROM BURY TO BRIGHTON
This red carpet event features a World Premiere. David Brooks had been a regular paddler in the outdoor pool at Middle Brighton Baths for almost 10 years when a group of swimmers in the open water on the other side of the fenceline caught his attention. Dressed in old-fashioned swimsuits and bathing caps, the Icebergers, who were competing in the annual Olsen-Hooper summer handicap, soon became Brooks’s regular bathing buddies.
From the creative mind of David Brooks and George Giampietri the story of one man’s journey from Britain to Australia
to discover the Brighton Icebergers.
An inventive, hilarious and often very wet film that will take you on a tour de force of the pier politics of cold water swimming, the
true romance and comedy of the steam room, and the adventures and predicaments of taking on a full winter with just a pair of Speedos
and a waterproof camera.
“You wake up in the morning and you go through your mind thinking, ‘Why the hell am I doing this? Why am I putting myself through this?’” David Brooks says, pushing back a shock of damp yellow hair from his ruddy forehead.
“But then all of a sudden, after about 10 or 15 minutes, your body adapts and you get this glow coming through you and it’s amazing.”
Brooks – Brooksy to his friends – is a member of the Brighton Icebergers, the group that braves the bay year-round
in waters dipping as low as 7 degrees celsius in winter.
